The town can trace its heritage back to 600 AD and Lytham is mentioned in the Doomesday Book in the 11th century, however the town as we know it was developed from 1790s onwards as its popularity as a seaside health resort grew. St. Annes-on-sea was built out of the sand dunes in the 1870s, and the towns joined together in 1923, although each retains its own personality. Today the town still attracts many visitors from the North West in search of a day out at the seaside. Lytham St.Annes has built a worldwide reputation for its golf courses, and regularly hosts the British Open Golf championship at Royal Lytham St. Annes golf course.
